Ransomware group leaks 1.44 million files stolen from Berlin state government

Rhysida ransomware group leaked 1.44 million files from Berlin’s state government after the city refused to pay a $2.3 million ransom.

Berlin officials acknowledged the breach in a public statement and said they would not negotiate with the attackers, describing the incident as an “extremely serious crime and an attack on the state of Berlin.” A full-scale investigation was launched shortly afterward.

According to the German public broadcaster Tagesschau, the leaked archive contains 1.44 million files totaling 5.8 terabytes. The Chaos Computer Club, Germany’s largest hacker organization, said the data includes sensitive information about the city’s water supply, personal data of administrative staff, employment references, and emergency plans.

A few days after the attack, Rhysida posted the full dataset on the dark web. In response, Berlin’s Senate Chancellery set up an additional steering unit under Chief Digital Officer Florian Hauer to coordinate the review and evaluation of the leaked files and support two affected Senate administrations in informing and advising citizens and companies.
