Report: Google Gemini Overlay May Add Chat/Task Selector, Recent-Chat and Proactive Assistance Buttons

The publication, citing its own reporting and an examination of unreleased app code, said a future version of Gemini could place a Chat/Task selector directly inside the overlay, the panel that appears on top of other apps when the assistant is summoned. The same interface may also add buttons that open recent Gemini conversations and a separate button for Proactive Assistance.

Those additions would build on features Android Authority has tracked in recent months. In June, the site reported finding an Agent Dashboard button inside the overlay's plus menu, offering immediate access to recent chats. Earlier this month, it said Google may also bring Gemini Spark into the overlay. The latest findings, the report said, represent progress on both items and include at least one feature not previously described.

That additional item is a new Browser option in the app's settings, which Android Authority said would let users switch between a remote browser and Chrome on the device when running Gemini Spark tasks. The report did not describe how the switch would behave in use or when it might reach users.

As the overlay works today, it lets users activate Gemini Live and open the plus menu. The proposed buttons would place persistent entry points to conversation history and Proactive Assistance inside the overlay rather than requiring users to open the full app.

Android Authority published the details through its Authority Insights series, which covers app teardowns, leaks and exclusive reports. The features described come from software that has not been released, and Google has not announced them. The report included no company statement and no timeline for a public rollout, and features spotted in unreleased app builds are not always shipped to users.
