Report: GrapheneOS's first Motorola phones will be high-end flagships, cost more than Pixels
According to Android Authority, GrapheneOS's first Motorola phones, arriving in 2027, will be expensive flagships, with cheaper models delayed due to Qualcomm's support limitations.
The project explained in a social media response that it is starting with flagship phones because they offer the hardware and security features needed to meet its stringent requirements. Lower-end phones will take longer to qualify because Qualcomm does not currently provide the same level of security and long-term software support on its cheaper chipsets, Android Authority reported.
GrapheneOS said the latest Snapdragon flagship platforms offer the strongest security capabilities, and it expects Motorola to eventually commit to longer software support for its non-flagsship devices before they can pass certification. The project previously noted that Qualcomm's progress in hardware security was a key factor making Motorola support possible.
The platform also plans to align its Motorola builds with major Android releases, preparing its code ahead of time so it can push updates as soon as new versions launch. To do so, GrapheneOS will need to host and maintain its own AOSP Git repositories, according to the report.
No specific Motorola models have been announced yet, but Android Authority notes that the first GrapheneOS-powered Motorola phones will not be inexpensive.
