Riot Games Delays League of Legends Team Voice Chat, With No New Patch Target

Riot delayed League of Legends team voice chat after saying it would arrive in Patch 26.20. No new date was given.

The reversal came shortly after Riot had said team voice chat was finally coming to the popular MOBA. According to Engadget, the original plan placed the feature in select regions in October's 26.20 patch. Instead, the studio said it is making the implementation a priority, without providing a reason for the delay or a revised timeline.

In a post on X, the League of Legends Dev Team wrote: "We announced Team Voice as coming to NA/OCE in Patch 26.20, but made the call to push it to meet the quality bar you deserve. No new target patch to share yet, but we're making this a priority to get right." The post was dated September 22, 2026. The dev team said it wanted to get the news out separately from that day's Patch Notes.

The delay affects players who have waited 17 years for an in-game team voice option, according to Engadget. The feature had been presented as arriving for North America and Oceania, but Riot did not explain what specifically failed to meet its standards.

Engadget reported that the reversal could be related to moderation issues. League of Legends has a reputation for toxic in-game behavior, and Riot has worked in recent years to address it. The company's initial approach to making voice chat manageable may have included requiring a minimum Honor level to demonstrate a history of good behavior, but Engadget noted it is possible that system was not working as intended. Another possible issue, according to Engadget, was the "voice skin" concept, which would let players change how they sound to teammates.

Riot did not confirm either possibility. The studio's public statement focused only on quality, and it did not say when team voice chat might now arrive. For players, the announcement marks a second wait after a brief expectation that the feature was close to release.

The decision leaves voice chat absent from League of Legends 26.20 despite the earlier announcement. Riot said the feature remains a priority, but with no target patch, the timing of any future rollout is unclear.
