Robotic System Uses Generative AI to Support Stroke Rehabilitation

Robotic rehab system learns from therapists and uses AI and force feedback to assist stroke patients, developers say.

The system draws on what it has learned from real therapists to give patients what the report describes as just the right amount of assistance during rehabilitation exercises such as reaching, lifting their arms and performing tasks of daily living. Lachner says the goal is “not to replace therapists, but to extend their reach.”

Initial robotic experiments have already demonstrated the feasibility of the approach, Lachner said, according to the report. The next phase of the project aims to develop therapist-specific models and evaluate them in a long-term clinical study with the same patients who previously received manual therapy.

Beyond rehabilitation, Lachner envisions possible applications in contact-rich industrial settings or collaborative workspaces, the report says.
