Rockstar Says GTA VI's Engine and Team Could Shorten the Wait for the Next Game

Rockstar technical lead Phil Hooker told Bloomberg that the engine, tools and team built during GTA VI's development will let the studio work faster, suggesting the gap before the next Grand Theft Auto may be shorter than the 13 years fans waited this time.

Phil Hooker made the remarks in Bloomberg's report on the making of GTA VI, which was cited by The Verge. GTA VI took eight years to produce, leaving a 13-year gap between its release and that of GTA V. "I feel confident that we can build on top of this [GTA VI] and go more sideways than upwards to build more compelling content," Hooker told Bloomberg.

The report pointed to the one-year gap between Grand Theft Auto III and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City as evidence that a faster turnaround is possible. That schedule was achievable because Rockstar already had the framework in place for its next project before finishing the previous one.

Rockstar also set up a studio dedicated to creating nonplayable characters after the team concluded it lacked the production capabilities to write and animate all of the game's NPCs, a decision the report links to the delay. "I think when it became apparent that some areas weren't going to make it, that's when we decided to make the shift of date," Hooker said. "We could hit that schedule, but it won't be the game we want to make."

On the cost of the project, Rockstar publishing head Jennifer Kolbe rejected a report that claimed GTA VI was more expensive to build than Dubai's Burj Khalifa. According to the Bloomberg account, the game did not cost more than $1.5 billion to develop.

Rockstar head of development Aaron Garbut also addressed the large leak of GTA VI material in 2022. "It feels like somebody's wading through your dirty washing," Garbut told Bloomberg. "It's like they're inside your head. You see your early work out there. Nobody's ever supposed to see that. It's really weirdly invasive. And so it's quite hard to deal with on an emotional level."

The report further noted that Rockstar's headcount has grown from 2,441 employees in 2018 to 4,711 across 12 offices.

GTA VI is scheduled to launch on November 19th on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X | S.
