The primary purpose of the Wi-Fi connection is to work with Roland's new teaching app, Piano Sphere. The app offers guidance, real-time feedback, and a library of popular songs and courses. Users control many aspects via a smartphone or tablet, but the piano can operate some functions independently, such as recording playing history and detecting when a player is struggling to flash an assistance button. Using Wi-Fi instead of Bluetooth is intended to reduce lag during practice.

Another benefit of Wi-Fi is automatic software updates. Both the app and piano software will update automatically, with Roland promising new services, feature enhancements, and ecosystem integrations over time.

The FP-40 also includes Roland's Piano Reality Sound Engine, fully weighted hammer-action keys with a triple-sensor system, and a new speaker system that enhances the low register. It has a Bluetooth receiver for streaming external music. The piano is available in black and white for $750, and is on sale now.
