S. Korean, U.S. air forces to sign LOI on autonomous combat platform cooperation

S. Korea, U.S. air forces to sign LOI on autonomous combat platform cooperation Thursday, Seoul says.

The autonomous collaborative platform, or ACP, refers to an autonomous system designed to work with manned aircraft and other unmanned assets to carry out air missions, according to the Air Force. Such manned-unmanned teaming, known as MUM-T, is considered a cornerstone of next-generation air operations because it can reduce risks to pilots and significantly increase operational range and survival chances.

The agreement comes as the U.S. Air Force is pushing for the development and operational integration of unmanned combat aircraft systems. South Korea's Air Force is also working to lay the groundwork for securing operational capabilities for MUM-T systems.

Building on the collaboration, the two air forces plan to strengthen cooperation to advance operational concepts and interoperability for future MUM-T combat systems, the South Korean Air Force said.
