Samsung 4TB 990 Pro SSD falls to $799.90 on Amazon

Amazon has cut the 4TB Samsung 990 Pro SSD to $799.90 from $1,099.99, a $300.09 discount, TechRadar reports.

TechRadar reported that the 990 Pro reached sequential read speeds of up to 7,450MB/s and sequential write speeds of up to 6,900MB/s in its tests, making it suited to transferring large files and handling demanding storage tasks. The publication said the drive delivered the fastest read and write performance of any PCIe 4.0 SSD it has tested.

The 4TB model uses an M.2 2280 design, Samsung V-NAND TLC flash memory, an in-house controller, and 4GB of LPDDR4 DRAM cache. TechRadar listed random read performance at up to 1.6 million IOPS and random writes at up to 1.55 million IOPS. The drive carries a five-year limited warranty with a 2,400TB total bytes written endurance limit.

TechRadar’s review described the 990 Pro as “an absolutely stellar M.2 SSD for both professional users and gamers alike.” The publication said large project assets would load faster, games would have shorter loading screens, and apps and games would start faster. TechRadar recommended the 4TB model for professionals who need large amounts of fast internal storage, including those working with high-resolution video, large datasets, and complex creative projects. It said buyers should skip the drive if their main priority is low-cost storage, if they do not regularly run demanding applications, or if they are building a PCIe 5.0 system and want to consider newer SSD options.

TechRadar noted that Amazon usually sells the 4TB 990 Pro for $1,099.99. The publication also reported that the drive was priced at $249.99 during 2023’s Black Friday sales, below the current deal price. For buyers who do not need the 990 Pro’s speed and capacity, TechRadar pointed to the 2TB 990 SSD and the PCIe 5.0 9100 Pro as alternatives, with the latter rated for read speeds up to 14,700MB/s.
