Samsung 990 2TB SSD Drops to $330 on Amazon, TechRadar Calls It Best-Value 2TB Drive

Amazon cut the Samsung 990 2TB SSD to $330, a $200 discount; TechRadar calls it the best-value 2TB SSD now.

The Samsung 990 is advertised with sequential read speeds up to 7,250MB/s and write speeds up to 6,450MB/s. Random performance is rated at up to 850,000 read IOPS and 1,200,000 write IOPS. The drive includes hardware encryption, Samsung Magician drive-management software and a three-year limited warranty. Samsung claims up to 38% better performance per watt than the 990 Pro under its own test conditions, according to TechRadar.

TechRadar said it had not tested the standard 990, but had reviewed the upgraded Samsung 990 Pro, which it rated at five stars. It said the 990 is a strong choice for users who do not need flagship-tier performance. The publication listed desktop PC builders, content creators, professionals working with large files and users upgrading from smaller or slower SSDs as likely buyers.

At $329.99, the drive is about 38% off and costs roughly $165 per terabyte. TechRadar said the price is the lowest it has been in 30 days on Amazon and matches its lowest price ever there. The publication recommended buyers act while the limited-time offer lasts.

TechRadar's buying guidance said the Samsung 990 is suitable for a desktop, workstation or compatible laptop that needs 2TB of fast internal storage. It advised buyers to skip the drive if they are on a tight budget, can find a cheaper rival 2TB SSD, or need the higher-end 990 Pro. The drive is an internal M.2 SSD, so a compatible slot and PCIe 4.0 support are required to reach the advertised maximum speeds.
