Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 and Tab A9 Enter Final Year of Major Software Support
Samsung's Galaxy Tab S9 and Tab A9 series are getting their last major Android updates in 2026, while newer models carry seven-year support commitments.
The Galaxy Tab S9 series arrived in 2023 running One UI 5.1 on Android 13. Samsung committed to four generations of major OS updates and five years of security patches for these devices. The tablets should continue to receive security updates until sometime in 2028.
The Galaxy Tab S8, S8+ and S8 Ultra, released in February 2022, have already received their final major OS upgrade with One UI 8, based on Android 16. Security updates for that lineup should continue until February 2027.
Android 16 is also the last major update for the Galaxy Tab A9 and A9+, which were released in October 2023. Although the A9 series is newer than the Tab S8, it has already received its final major OS update, likely because it was a budget-oriented product. It will still receive another year of security updates.
Newer Galaxy Tab models come with longer support cycles. Samsung began its seven-year software update policy with the Galaxy Tab S10 series launched in 2024, and the Galaxy Tab S11 and S12 models carry the same commitment. Even Samsung's budget Galaxy Tab A11 and A11+ devices, released in 2025, are eligible for seven years of Android and security updates.
Samsung's rugged Galaxy Tab Active lineup follows different rules. The Galaxy Tab Active5 launched in 2024 with a four-year commitment to Android OS updates and five years of security updates. Since it shipped with Android 14, it should receive OS updates through Android 18, with security patches continuing until 2029.
Rollout schedules vary by tablet model and region. Samsung says users who have not yet seen the One UI 9 update should not assume their device has been left out. Updates can be checked by going to Settings > Software update > Download and install; if an update is pending, users can tap Install now.
