Samsung RGB TV vs LG OLED: Comparison Shows Different Strengths in Brightness and Color

RGB TVs, which use red, green, and blue mini-LEDs in their backlight instead of standard white LEDs, are being touted as a potential successor to OLED. TechRadar's reviewer said the technology has shown promising signs in previous tests, and the side-by-side comparison aimed to see how RGB stacks up against a top-tier OLED.

According to TechRadar's measurements, in peak HDR brightness the LG G6 measured 3,004 nits in its most recent firmware version, up from 2,471 nits in earlier tests, both in Filmmaker Mode. The Samsung R95H reached 1,977 nits in Filmmaker Mode and 1,960 nits in its brighter movie mode. This gives the G6 a clear edge in HDR highlights. The review observed that real-world scenes such as the headlamps in “Speed Racer” and snow footage from the Spears & Munsil UHD Benchmark showed more punch on the G6.

However, in fullscreen HDR brightness, the R95H hit 612 nits compared to the G6's 451 nits. TechRadar also noted that the R95H's glare-free matte screen did a better job of eliminating mirror-like reflections, while the G6's anti-reflective screen still performed well for an OLED.

On color, TechRadar found that both TVs delivered vibrant and accurate images in test scenes from “Speed Racer” and “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.” The G6's colors had more depth and richness, though it occasionally leaned too heavily into red, making shades like Mario's hat look oversaturated. The R95H offered a more subtle, natural-looking color profile.

TechRadar concluded that the choice between the two depends on what viewers prioritize: the LG G6 excels in peak HDR brightness and color richness, while the Samsung R95H is better for bright-room viewing due to its higher fullscreen brightness and superior reflection control. The results show RGB technology is closing the performance gap with OLED.
