Samsung's next rugged XCover phone may add a built-in RFID reader
Samsung may be readying a rugged Galaxy XCover phone with a built-in RFID reader, per a Geekbench listing.
Android Authority reported that the interesting part of the chip is not necessarily its performance but its built-in RFID reader. The processor supports RFID scanning alongside 5G, Wi-Fi 7 and UWB, according to the report. For a rugged phone, that combination could point to a device designed to scan and track inventory in workplaces, the report said. Samsung’s XCover line has been built for users who need a phone that can survive demanding environments and drops, rather than one with flashy cameras or an unusually thin design.
The report also said Samsung has filed a trademark for “Galaxy XCover Scan,” though the filing’s connection to the mysterious phone remains unconfirmed. The SM-G778B model number has appeared on Geekbench, but the report did not confirm that the device will reach the market with the RFID feature intact.
Last year’s Galaxy XCover 7 family continued the line’s focus with a rugged design, a removable battery and seven years of software support, according to Android Authority. The publication said the family earned an honorable mention among its favorite Samsung phones.
The report frames the RFID reader as the potential standout feature of the next XCover device, rather than the processor’s raw speed. It says the chip’s RFID support is built in and sits alongside 5G, Wi-Fi 7 and UWB connectivity. The listing and trademark filing together suggest Samsung may be exploring a work-focused handset that can read RFID tags, but the evidence remains limited to the Geekbench entry and the unconfirmed trademark link.
