Samsung Wallet adds digital car key support for Volkswagen EVs

Samsung Wallet now supports digital car keys for select Volkswagen EVs, allowing Galaxy users to lock, unlock, and share access, starting in Europe Aug. 18.

Samsung Wallet has been steadily expanding digital car key support. It added support for Mercedes, Volvo, and Porsche last year, and began supporting some Toyota cars earlier this year. The new Volkswagen integration extends that list to VW ID models including the ID.Polo, ID.Cross, ID.3Neo, ID.4, ID.5, ID.7, and ID.Buzz. Android Authority said the feature will only work with those models when they are running ID software version 6.0.1.

The feature uses ultra-wideband (UWB) on compatible phones, including the newly launched Galaxy Z Fold 8 series, the flagship Galaxy S26 series, and other premium models. Users with UWB-compatible devices can lock and unlock their cars without taking their phones out of their pockets. On devices without UWB, the digital car key relies on NFC, which requires users to physically tap their phone on the car’s door handle.

Samsung said digital car keys in Samsung Wallet are secured by Samsung Knox and stored locally on the device. If a Galaxy phone is lost or stolen, users can remotely manage or remove their car keys.
