Samsung’s 27-inch Odyssey G80HF 5K gaming monitor drops to $599.99

Samsung’s 27-inch Odyssey G80HF 5K gaming monitor is discounted to $599.99 at Amazon and B&H Photo, $100 below its prior best price, according to The Verge.

The G80HF uses a Fast IPS panel and supports two display modes: 5K resolution at up to 180Hz, or 1440p at up to 360Hz. Samsung lists Nvidia G-Sync compatibility and AMD FreeSync Premium, which are intended to keep the monitor’s refresh rate aligned with the GPU’s frame output, according to The Verge. The monitor has one DisplayPort 2.1 port, two HDMI 2.1 ports and a USB hub for charging or connecting two USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 accessories. The report said Samsung does not advertise the bandwidth of the DisplayPort 2.1 connection.

The 1-millisecond response time is a common figure among gaming monitors, including some that cost hundreds of dollars less, but The Verge described it as relatively rare in a 5K monitor at this price. The publication compared the G80HF with KTC’s sub-$500 5K model, which it tested last year and found to offer an “atrocious” gaming experience despite gaming-ready claims. It also cited LG’s 27-inch UltraGear evo 5K Mini LED monitor at $799.99, which offers more dimming zones, higher brightness and USB-C video input with 90W power delivery. LG’s dual-mode refresh rates are 165Hz and 330Hz, lower than Samsung’s 180Hz and 360Hz, though The Verge said it did not see that as much of a downside.

The discount places the Samsung model below LG’s 5K gaming option while retaining higher refresh-rate ceilings in both 5K and 1440p modes. The Verge’s report framed the G80HF as one of the better monitors for buyers who want a pixel-dense 5K screen but also care about gaming performance, a combination that has been less common at the lower end of the 5K market.

The same report also noted other retail promotions, including a $10 saving on a gaming gift card when bundled with select games such as Grand Theft Auto VI at Best Buy, a $13.49 digital deluxe edition of Demon’s Souls on the PlayStation Store through Nov. 4 on the West Coast, and Ugreen’s Nexode Pro multi-port charger at $59.99. Those offers were separate from the Samsung monitor discount.
