SanDisk 8TB Desk Drive at $112.50/TB Undercuts 8TB Samsung 870 QVO at $185/TB
SanDisk's 8TB Desk Drive costs $899.99, or $112.50 per TB, undercutting Samsung's 8TB 870 QVO at $1,480.
TechRadar described the Desk Drive as a compact desktop SSD designed to sit on a desk or be carried around. It is aimed at professionals, creators and users who need to manage huge files or large numbers of small files. SanDisk sells it direct for $899.99.
In comparing per-TB prices, TechRadar said the Teamgroup QX 4TB, at $346 on Amazon or $86.50 per TB, is cheaper per TB. The report said the SanDisk Desk Drive is more affordable per unit of storage than all other SSDs, internal or external. It added that the next cheapest 8TB SSD is the Samsung 870 QVO at $1,480, or $185 per TB, almost 60% more expensive.
TechRadar scored the SanDisk Desk Drive four stars in its review. The publication said the SSD provides both speed and capacity, making it a great solution for individuals to use in homes, small offices, studios, and all other workspaces. In its tests, copying 1TB of images, a mix of 1,200 RAW and JPG files, from an OWC CFExpress Type-B card for use in Photoshop took just under two minutes. Feeding 4K video files into Final Cut Pro produced no dropped frames, and video editing was smooth, TechRadar said.
In CrystalMark, TechRadar clocked read speeds at 1032.48MB/s and write speeds at 1010.49MB/s, which it said is enough for most uses. The drive is not the fastest compared with something like the latest model of the SanDisk Extreme SSD. TechRadar said it would have liked more software bundled with the drive and an extra USB-C port rather than a proprietary power port, but it could not fault the simplicity and performance.
TechRadar called the $899.99 price a fair deal and worth picking up based on prices from other retailers. It said the price is not an all-time low; that came in March 2025, when the drive was priced at $469.99. The historic high was in April this year, when it was selling for $1,600. TechRadar still described the current price as good for a reliable high-capacity SSD.
The report said many people do not need 8TB of storage, and simpler 1TB and 2TB external SSDs are much cheaper for general file and data storage, although none can match the Desk Drive's per-TB price. The Desk Drive is compact but not as slim as the SanDisk Extreme range, so it is slightly bulkier in a laptop bag, and it requires an external power adaptor.
TechRadar advised buying the SanDisk Desk Drive for users who want a compact desk SSD with lots of storage and fast file transfers. It advised skipping it for users who have no need for 8TB storage or who want the fastest speeds available.
Editor's Summary TechRadar reported that SanDisk's 8TB Desk Drive is selling for $899.99, or $112.50 per TB, below the 8TB Samsung 870 QVO's $1,480, or $185 per TB. The portable drive earned four stars for speed and capacity in TechRadar's review, with read and write speeds above 1,000 MB/s in CrystalMark. TechRadar said buyers who do not need 8TB can find cheaper 1TB or 2TB drives, and the Desk Drive needs an external power adaptor.
