Satechi Thunderbolt 5 CubeDock Reviewed as Match for New M6 Mac mini

According to 9to5Mac, Satechi's Thunderbolt 5 CubeDock adds eight ports, an M.2 NVMe SSD bay and up to 140W host charging for Apple's new M6 and M5 Pro Mac mini. It sells for $399.99 on Amazon with a cable bundle promotion.

Apple released the new Mac mini late last month with the M6 and M5 Pro chips, 9to5Mac reported. The CubeDock is designed to pair with that model or the current M4 and M4 Pro Mac mini, and it can be placed side by side with the Mac mini or stacked on top. It brings eight additional ports, an internal SSD bay and host charging for laptops.

With Thunderbolt 5, the dock supports up to 120Gbps of throughput. According to 9to5Mac, that allows up to three 6K at 60Hz or 4K at 144Hz displays with the M5 Pro through a single cable, or two displays with any other chipset. The port selection includes two 10Gbps USB-C ports, two 10Gbps USB-A ports, a 2.5G Ethernet port, an SD card reader, a microSD card reader and an additional 3.5mm combo audio jack. Both card readers support UHS-II.

The M.2 NVMe SSD bay is large enough to fit drives with a built-in heatsink, 9to5Mac said, a feature not found in every dock with an SSD bay. The bay sits inside the enclosure and does not expand the dock's footprint. It can hold an 8TB SSD running at up to 6000MB/s and supports 2230, 2242, 2260 and 2280 drive sizes.

In its review, 9to5Mac said the CubeDock is the best option for users who want a dock that takes advantage of Thunderbolt 5 and looks at home with a Mac mini. The outlet also said the $399.99 price is high and likely hard for most people to justify unless they want to run everything through one dock with an integrated SSD hub. The dock gets quite warm during use, according to 9to5Mac, but not to a concerning level; users will notice the warmth if they touch it, though it is probably not an issue for a device that sits on a desk.

9to5Mac also said the new Mac mini is worth buying and remains readily available with September delivery, unlike previous M4 models that were hard to find. It listed Amazon pre-order prices of $879 for an M6 Mac mini with 256GB storage and 16GB memory, $1,069 for an M6 model with 512GB storage and 16GB memory, and $1,669 for an M5 Pro Mac mini with 512GB storage and 24GB memory.
