Seagate 24TB Expansion desktop drive falls to $690 at Best Buy

The drive provides 24TB of capacity with USB 3.0 connectivity, compatibility with Windows and Mac machines, Seagate's Toolkit backup software, Rescue Data Recovery Services, a supplied 18W AC power adapter and a one-year warranty. TechRadar recommends it for professionals who need large amounts of desktop storage for backups, photographs, video and other large files without installing an internal drive.

At the discounted price, storage works out to roughly 2.9 cents per gigabyte. A single 24TB unit can hold archives and backups that would otherwise be spread across several smaller drives or kept in paid cloud storage.

Setup is described as straightforward: the drive connects to a Windows PC or Apple Mac and files can be transferred immediately, while the bundled Toolkit software is available for managing backups. Because the unit runs from an external power adapter, it is intended to stay on a desk rather than travel with a laptop.

The discount comes with a caveat on price history. At the end of December 2025, Best Buy sold the same 24TB Expansion drive for $279.99, reduced from $329.99. Measured against that earlier sale, today's $689.99 price is $410 higher, or about 146%. TechRadar notes that the comparison illustrates how sharply storage prices have moved in a year, so while buyers save nearly $140 against the current regular price, this is not the cheapest the drive has been.

TechRadar's guidance is to buy the 24TB Seagate external drive for those who need a large amount of storage now and would rather keep everything on one external drive than manage several smaller ones, adding that the USB 3.0 connection provides more bandwidth than the mechanical drive requires for file transfers. It advises skipping the purchase for buyers who can wait for storage prices to improve or for a larger promotion, since the desktop model needs the supplied 18W power adapter alongside a USB connection and cannot be used as a plug-in portable drive. As a cheaper alternative, TechRadar points to a 2TB portable hard drive with USB 3.0 connectivity, plug-and-play operation, backup capabilities, an Adobe Creative Cloud trial and a one-year warranty.
