Seoul Police Officer Indicted Over AI Deepfake Videos and Illegal Footage

A Seoul police officer has been indicted for allegedly creating about 400 deepfake videos of acquaintances and distributing about 50, while possessing about 5,600 illegally filmed videos, including about 1,600 involving child abuse, Yonhap News Agency reports.

The officer was stationed at Seoul's Dongdaemun Police Station, the prosecutors said. He was earlier arrested and detained by investigators from the Busan Metropolitan Police Agency.

The arrest followed a months-long undercover investigation launched in December 2025 to verify suspicions that illegal, exploitative videos were being circulated via Telegram, Yonhap reported.

The police officer was later found to have been investigated for a similar offense before joining the police, but the prosecution decided against indicting him at that time.

He was also charged with possessing about 5,600 illegally filmed videos, including about 1,600 that involve child abuse, and producing about 10 illegally filmed videos using his mobile phone, according to the prosecution.
