Seoul Shares Fall for Sixth Straight Session as AI Spending Concerns and ASML Outlook Weigh

South Korea's KOSPI closed down 0.44% at 6,008.81 on Wednesday, its sixth consecutive decline, after early gains tied to New York Fed comments were erased by ASML's weaker 2026 sales outlook, according to Yonhap.

Trading was volatile. The index opened 0.44 percent higher and climbed 2.57 percent by about 9:34 a.m. after New York Fed President John Williams said in a media interview that he saw no need for further monetary tightening next year. Those gains were erased after Dutch tech company ASML, which supplies chip-manufacturing machines to makers including Samsung Electronics, reported a 2026 sales outlook that fell short of market expectations despite strong third-quarter earnings. The revision followed an 84 percent rise in ASML's share price over the year, Yonhap reported.

"The KOSPI erased all of its gains after ASML's earnings report," Seo Sang-young, a senior analyst at Mirae Asset Securities, said. He added that investors were also awaiting U.S. consumer price data later in the day.

The KOSPI has declined since the previous Tuesday, including a 5.46 percent plunge in the prior session.

Trade volume was moderate at 350.8 million shares worth 19.9 trillion won (US$14.9 billion). Gainers outnumbered decliners 502 to 369. Foreign investors sold a net 1.18 trillion won and individuals a net 309.3 billion won, outweighing net buying of 808.3 billion won by institutions.

Semiconductor shares closed lower. SK hynix fell 1.66 percent to 1.42 million won and chip equipment maker Hanmi Semiconductor dropped 5.02 percent to 217,500 won. Samsung Electronics ended flat at 232,000 won. Bank stocks also weakened, with Hana Financial Group down 2.25 percent to 121,600 won and KB Financial Group 1.97 percent lower at 159,200 won. Retailer Lotte Shopping sank 4.47 percent to 89,800 won, and Samyang Foods, known for its Buldak ramyeon line, shed 2.47 percent to 1.14 million won.

Some shares advanced. Battery maker LG Energy Solution gained 2.93 percent to 422,000 won, refiner SK Innovation jumped 4.08 percent to 163,200 won, production studio CJ ENM climbed 6.9 percent to 37,950 won and cosmetics manufacturer APR added 4.06 percent to 294,500 won.

The won was quoted at 1,338.3 per dollar as of 3:30 p.m., up 6.8 won from the previous stock trading session's close. Bond prices fell, lifting the yield on three-year Treasurys 2.6 basis points to 3.883 percent and the return on the benchmark five-year government bonds 1.7 basis points to 4.047 percent.
