Seoul Stocks Open Sharply Higher as Chip Shares Rally on Revived AI Optimism

South Korea's KOSPI jumped more than 2 percent at Tuesday's open, lifted by Samsung Electronics, SK hynix and other tech heavyweights, after the Nasdaq closed at a record on renewed AI optimism.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index rose 153.89 points, or 2.2 percent, to 7,161.61 at the opening bell. By 9:15 a.m., the index was up 141.58 points, or 2.02 percent, at 7,149.3, giving back part of its initial advance.

The gains in Seoul followed a rally in U.S. markets on Monday local time. The Nasdaq Composite climbed 2.3 percent, the S&P 500 added 1.5 percent and the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.7 percent. Yonhap attributed the improved investor sentiment to a broad rally in AI-related shares, lower oil prices and softening U.S. Treasury yields.

Most market heavyweights in Seoul traded higher. Samsung Electronics, the market's largest company by capitalization, rose 2.55 percent. Chipmaker SK hynix gained 3.21 percent, and SK Square, the parent company of SK hynix, advanced 3.02 percent. Samsung Electro-Mechanics, an electronic components affiliate of Samsung Electronics, jumped 6.58 percent.

In the currency market, the Korean won was quoted at 1,369.6 won against the U.S. dollar, up 4.9 won from the close of the previous stock trading session.
