Seoul stocks sink 6.7% as AI spending and U.S. inflation worries hit chip shares
Seoul's KOSPI fell 6.73% to 5,604.6 Thursday morning, triggering a five-minute trading halt, as AI spending doubts and a hotter-than-expected U.S. September CPI drove chipmakers Samsung Electronics and SK hynix sharply lower.
Earlier in the session the index fell more than 5 percent, prompting the country's bourse operator to suspend trading for five minutes.
The move in Seoul followed a lower close on Wall Street, where the sustainability of AI-related spending and September consumer price data weighed on investor sentiment. According to official U.S. data released Wednesday U.S. time, the September Consumer Price Index rose 0.6 percent from a month earlier, the fastest pace since April.
Losses were concentrated in chipmakers. Samsung Electronics fell 7.87 percent, while SK hynix dropped 9.87 percent. Hyundai Motor slid 5.1 percent, KB Financial lost 1.13 percent and Hanwha Aerospace shed 1.54 percent. Celltrion was among the few gainers, adding 3.13 percent.
The Korean won was trading at 1,350 won against the U.S. dollar as of 11:20 a.m., down 7.7 won from the previous session's close, according to the Yonhap report.
Editor's Summary
Seoul's KOSPI fell 6.73 percent to 5,604.6 by late Thursday morning, after an early drop of more than 5 percent briefly halted trading. The retreat tracked a weaker U.S. session, where doubts about the durability of AI spending and a 0.6 percent monthly rise in September consumer prices dampened sentiment. Samsung Electronics and SK hynix led the declines in Seoul, and the won weakened 7.7 won to 1,350 per dollar.
