September Pixel Drop Adds One-Tap Contact Calls and In-Message Scam Warnings

The update centers on Pixel VIPs, a widget Google introduced in June 2025 to keep frequently contacted people on the home screen. ZDNet reports that the earlier version required one tap to open a contact's profile card and a second tap to start a call or send a message, which made the shortcut barely faster than opening the phone's regular contacts app. The September release keeps the widget in place but adds direct call and text buttons on the home screen card itself.

Google says the widget supports up to 16 contacts. ZDNet noted that early reports indicate adding more than four contacts causes the widget to revert to its previous layout to save space.

The drop also widens Scam Detection, which until now listened to calls. ZDNet reports that Pixel phones will monitor what users type across messaging apps and show a "Likely scam" warning above the keyboard when someone begins replying to a suspicious message. Google says this processing runs on device in real time, so conversations stay private.

A "Likely scam" flag has appeared on text messages before. The September update expands the feature's reach and puts the protection directly inside Gboard, according to ZDNet. Users will receive a notification once the update is available for their device.

The Pixel Drop is separate from the September Android Drop, which introduced a way to keep track of important items and a feature aimed at motion sickness, ZDNet reported.
