Shelly Flood S Gen4 Leak Sensor Adds Matter and Apple Home for Under $30

Shelly has introduced the Flood S Gen4, a Matter-certified water leak sensor priced under $30 and compatible with Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, SmartThings and Home Assistant. It uses three stainless steel contact pads and can run up to two years on a CR123A battery.

The Flood S Gen4 differs from many leak sensors by using three large stainless steel pads spread across the bottom of the unit rather than small metal pins. The larger contact area is intended to detect water faster and in more places, the report said. The pads are also sensitive enough to detect clean or low-conductivity water, such as air-conditioning condensate, a type of leak that is often harder to catch. Its low-profile design allows it to slide under appliances, behind toilets and beneath sinks.

The sensor is Matter certified and supports Wi-Fi and Zigbee, according to 9to5Mac. That makes it compatible with Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, SmartThings and Home Assistant. Once connected to Apple Home, the report said, users can build automations that cut power to a washing machine or dishwasher when water is detected, provided the appliance is plugged into a smart outlet. The sensor can also trigger every smart bulb in a house or send an alert to an iPhone when a leak is detected, which the report described as helpful when the user is out of town.

In addition to phone notifications, the Flood S Gen4 includes a built-in local alarm so people in the house can hear an alert even if their phone is in another room. Shelly includes two operating modes, flood detection and rain detection, along with three alarm profiles named intense, normal and economic. These settings let users balance leak detection speed against battery life. The device runs for up to two years on the included CR123A battery, according to the report.

9to5Mac said the sensor is the kind of accessory a user might buy three or four of without thinking, placing them in front of a water heater, in front of a dishwasher, under a washing machine and under a kitchen sink. The report said Matter and Apple Home support allow users to receive alerts from the Home app and build Apple Home automations around the sensor. The Flood S Gen4 can be purchased from Amazon or directly from Shelly.
