Shelly's Presence Gen4 Sensor Detects Up to Ten People Without a Camera
Shelly has launched the Presence Gen4, an $84.99 mmWave radar sensor that can detect up to ten people and pets without a camera, enabling multi-zone smart home automations.
The sensor is the company's latest smart home automation accessory after its $50 subscription-free security camera last month. The Presence Gen4 tracks presence, motion and activities of people and pets without recording them, The Verge reported. It can sit on a shelf or table using a built-in stand, or it can be permanently mounted to a wall.
The unit has a 140-degree horizontal field of view and can monitor spaces as large as 650 square feet. It requires access to a power source for its USB-C cable. For integration, the sensor supports Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Zigbee and Matter, and works with Google Home, Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, Samsung SmartThings and Home Assistant.
The Presence Gen4 can trigger smart home automations when it detects a person entering a space, such as turning on lights, heating, cooling or music, and then turn those systems off when the person leaves to conserve power. Users can configure up to ten independently customizable detection zones. That allows a lamp to turn on only when someone sits at a desk, for example, or a home theater to power up only when someone settles onto a living room sofa.
The sensor can also be set to include small objects such as pets when they are detected. Alternatively, users can adjust its sensitivity so it ignores objects low to the ground, which is intended to keep automations from being triggered when a robot vacuum cleans the floor.
