Shelly’s new $50 security camera watches your home without a subscription
Shelly announced a $49.99 security camera that works without subscription, featuring local streaming and microSD recording.
The high-definition camera streams live footage to a phone or records events locally to a microSD card. It offers a 1080p resolution with a 110-degree horizontal and 70-degree vertical field of view, plus night vision. Since it has no battery, installation requires routing a USB-C cable for power.
Shelly said the camera will be available soon from its online store and other resellers in black or white. While competitors such as Wyze have released 2K cameras for $40, Shelly’s first camera is limited to 1080p and offers a subscription-free experience.
Without a subscription, users can live stream over Wi-Fi, capture events to a memory card, and trigger automations through other Shelly devices, such as turning on a floodlight when motion is detected. A paid subscription adds cloud recording and smart object detection that distinguishes people, pets, and vehicles, enabling customized alerts and automations.
