Google has made it clear that Chromebooks are not going anywhere. These devices will continue to be manufactured alongside Googlebooks, with the latter sitting at the higher end of the market. That means higher prices; rumors point to a price tag above the $1,000 mark in the US. Given the ongoing RAM crisis, all laptops are expected to become more expensive as 2026 progresses, so those seeking an affordable machine should buy a Chromebook now without hesitation.

The Googlebook is expected to deliver significantly more performance than a Chromebook, with the ability to run heavyweight software like Adobe Premiere Pro and to natively run Android apps. It is also rumored to include a handoff-style feature for working with Android phones and integrated Gemini AI capabilities. This makes it a better fit for power users and those eager to explore AI features, while everyday users who mainly browse the web, handle emails, and watch videos will find a Chromebook perfectly adequate.

In essence, Google is introducing a two-tier system: Chromebooks as the baseline, and Googlebooks at the top. If you want a solid, affordable everyday laptop, there is no need to wait for the Googlebook. But if you are willing to pay a premium for more powerful hardware and a more flexible OS, it may be worth holding out for the Googlebook later this year. Early adopters, however, should be prepared for possible bugs and teething troubles common with new operating systems.
