SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won to Inspect Ulsan AI Data Center Built With AWS

SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won will visit the group's AI data center under construction in Ulsan on Friday, a 7 trillion-won project with Amazon Web Services that is due to start operations in the second half of 2027.

Chey and other participants are expected to tour the construction site in Ulsan's national industrial complex and review how far the work has advanced, according to the sources.

The data center is being built by SK Group and AWS at an estimated cost of 7 trillion won (US$5.2 billion). Construction began with a groundbreaking ceremony in August last year, and the facility is scheduled to begin operations in the second half of 2027.

The center is designed to support high-performance computing based on graphics processing units and incorporates hybrid cooling systems, which the group says will provide greater performance and efficiency than conventional data centers.

SK Group plans to use the Ulsan facility as a hub for attracting AI companies, creating jobs and driving manufacturing innovation, with the aim of turning it into a new growth engine for the industrial city.

The visit, reported by Yonhap News, has not been publicly confirmed by the company, and no further details of Chey's schedule were provided in the report.
