Skate 3 Android port arrives, PS3 emulator ARMSX3 gets online play

An unofficial Skate 3 Android port runs on budget handhelds, and ARMSX3 PS3 emulator adds online play, according to Android Authority.

Skate 3 Mobile, released on GitHub by developer Buku313, is a fork of the recent Skate3Recomp project for PC. Unlike many Xbox 360 ports that still emulate the GPU, both Skate 3 ports feature a native Vulkan renderer, which can deliver faster performance than typical fan ports. The developer says the Android version is playable on the ANBERNIC RG406V, a handheld with a Unisoc T820 chip and Mali-G57 MC4 graphics. Playable performance uses a performance preset that sets the internal resolution to 512 x 288, while a quality preset runs at 720p at the expense of additional heating. Android Authority says this scalability means there is a good chance mid-range Android phones can run the port.

Installing Skate 3 Mobile requires sideloading the APK from GitHub, choosing a Skate 3 Xbox 360 ISO, and waiting for the app to extract the data. The port includes a virtual gamepad, physical gamepad support, frame rate caps, aspect ratio choices, and mod support. Android Authority tested the port on an AYANEO Pocket S Mini, where it froze or crashed before gameplay, and on a Retroid Pocket G2, where it ran smoothly at a near-locked 60fps but crashed occasionally. The developer has released several bug-fixing updates within less than 24 hours of the initial release. The creator says OpenAI's Codex assisted development, but that they reviewed changes and did all testing. The project is open source, allowing users to inspect the code or contribute. Android Authority advises sideloading on a secondary device without important personal data.

Separately, ARMSX3, which Android Authority describes as the latest PS3 emulator on Android, received several updates culminating in v0.9.3 on GitHub. The new version adds online play for PS3 games using the open-source RPCN framework for matchmaking instead of the PlayStation Network. The developer cautions that RPCN passwords are stored in plain text in a YML file, as with desktop RPCS3, and recommends not reusing passwords from other services. The update also allows users to save and switch between servers.

Recent ARMSX3 updates brought additional features, including importing save data within the app, access to PS3 console settings through advanced settings, and USB keyboard emulation. Compatibility fixes address crashes in Borderlands 2 and Bleach: Soul Resurrección before gameplay, and a bug fix shared with RPCS3 allows games that previously did not boot to start. Another fix prevents the emulator from stalling during gameplay, and shader compilation now runs on an Android device's little CPU cores, leaving the big cores for gameplay and graphics. Android Authority notes that, together with the Xendroid Xbox 360 emulator, enthusiasts currently have many cutting-edge emulation options on Android.
