Slate Opens First Showroom as $24,950 Electric Pickup Nears Production
Slate opened its first showroom in Chicago, displaying its $24,950 electric pickup and taking $300 pre-orders.
The Slate Experience Center occupies a former Tesla store just northwest of the Chicago Loop and is staffed by some former Tesla employees, according to Ars Technica. Visitors can look over a Slate Truck prototype, check customization options, buy Slate merchandise and put down the $300 deposit to pre-order the truck.
The Slate Truck is a bare-bones electric pickup priced at $24,950. It has plastic panels, a minimalist interior, manual window winders and a projected range of 205 miles, Ars Technica reported. Ars Technica said it rode in a Slate Truck over the summer but had not had a chance to shop for one before visiting the center.
The showroom is called the Slate Customer Experience Center in the Ars Technica account, which describes color chips on a wall visible through the truck’s windshield. The report ties the opening to Slate’s effort to sell a low-cost electric pickup designed for the American market for pickups.
