Slovakia Finds Russian Backdoors in Speed Cameras, Report Says
Slovakia's security service has discovered Russian backdoors and other flaws in newly acquired speed cameras, prompting deactivation and an independent audit.
The cameras are believed to be rebranded Russian CORDON PRO.M cameras produced by Semicon, a company based in St. Petersburg. They were reportedly purchased through a Cyprus-based shell company using fake certifications. Reports also say opposition party pressure led the NBU to investigate.
Besides the backdoor, the SecureBoot feature is ineffective, and the web management portal exposes live streams to anyone with the camera IP. The Slovak Ministry of the Interior has deactivated all installed and configured cameras. An independent auditor will be called in to confirm the NBU's findings.
Slashdot also reports that Croatia and some other Eastern European countries may have undiscovered problems with traffic cameras of similar origin.
