The review notes that the Echo 21 looks almost identical to its predecessor, but the internal improvements are substantial. All Thunderbolt ports have been upgraded from Thunderbolt 4 to Thunderbolt 5, doubling bidirectional bandwidth from 40 Gbps to 80 Gbps. Thunderbolt 5 also supports Bandwidth Boost, which can dynamically allocate up to 120 Gbps upstream under certain conditions, improving support for high-resolution, high-refresh-rate displays.

A new full-size DisplayPort is included, something the Thunderbolt 4 version lacked. The dock can connect a display via Thunderbolt/USB-C, HDMI, or DisplayPort, though HDMI and DisplayPort cannot be used simultaneously, and HDMI takes precedence when both are connected. HDMI caps at 4K60, while DisplayPort supports up to 4K144. Thunderbolt connectivity allows the widest range of resolutions and refresh rates.

The upstream Thunderbolt 5 port now delivers 140W of charging power, compared with 100W on the previous model, allowing it to fully power a 16-inch MacBook Pro. As a result, the dock's power adapter is larger, rated at 20V/12A.

Addressing a common criticism of the Echo 20, the Echo 21 includes 10Gb Ethernet using a Marvell AQC113 chipset. The controller also supports 5GbE, 2.5GbE, and GbE. The dock's audio subsystem has been upgraded to support lossless playback up to 24-bit/192kHz. It also has SD and microSD UHS-II slots, an M.2 SSD socket for up to 8TB of storage, nine 10Gbps USB ports, and additional charging ports. The Echo 21 is available now for $499.
