Sony adds free ad-supported TV channels to PS5 in the US

Sony adds over 100 free ad-supported TV channels to PS5 in the US, with Canada and other regions to follow.

The movie channels include action, sci-fi and horror offerings such as MovieSphere by Lionsgate, 50 Cent Action and Sony One Horror Hits. Available TV shows include Community, The Walking Dead, Deal or No Deal USA, Fear Factor and Ice Road Truckers. Anime channels feature Naruto, Sailor Moon, Hunter x Hunter and Death Note, while other channels focus on gaming, esports, podcasts and comedy.

Sony said Live TV on PS5 will be updated with refreshed programming and new channels, and the company plans to bring the service to Canada and other regions.

According to Engadget, the move is consistent with Sony's recent business decisions, such as largely ending production of game discs, as the company seeks to generate extra revenue from existing customers rather than selling PS5 units to newcomers. By keeping console owners on PlayStation's own FAST platform, Sony also competes with services like Pluto, Roku and Tubi.

The timing may face headwinds, Engadget reports, because Sony is still facing backlash over the depreciation of game discs and recently told European customers they would lose access to hundreds of movies they had purchased on the PlayStation Store after a licensing agreement expired. The publication likens the strategy to Microsoft's ill-fated pitch for the Xbox One as an all-in-one entertainment hub.
