Sony Bravia Theater Trio: Pricey Three-Piece Soundbar for Large TVs

The system comprises a center speaker that resembles a compact soundbar, equipped with two woofers and a tweeter, and two larger vertical side speakers, each with a woofer, a front-firing tweeter, and an angled up-firing driver. The side speakers stand just over 13 inches tall and connect wirelessly to the center unit, requiring only power cables and a single HDMI connection to the TV.

Unlike traditional soundbars, the Theater Trio has no physical buttons on any speaker. Users adjust volume and settings via the included remote or the Bravia Connect app. The reviewer noted that the app's initial setup process encountered repeated connection problems, though the system works immediately via HDMI eARC once powered on. The reviewer also mentioned that the tall side speakers may look more proportional when placed beside an 85-inch or larger screen, and that they didn't look out of place flanking a 50-inch TV.

Sony packs several proprietary audio technologies into the Trio, including 360 Spatial Sound Mapping, which simulates sound from virtual speakers, and Sound Field Optimization, a room-calibration feature using a USB-C microphone. Voice Zoom 3 uses AI to boost human voices in movies, while DSEE Ultimate upscales compressed music. A Multi Stereo mode plays the same audio from all speakers for parties, and an upmixing tool converts stereo content to 3D audio with AI Sound Separation for voice clarity.

The review concludes that the Trio is a decent option for huge TVs, but warns that the already expensive set may still require adding rear speakers for a fuller experience. The reviewer tested the system with a 50-inch TCL TV, noting that the side speakers are the largest they've tested beside a television.
