Sony Drops Promised Android 17 Update for Xperia 10 VI

Sony says the Xperia 10 VI will not receive Android 17, one of three major OS updates promised at launch, because of storage limitations. Security updates are expected to continue through June 2028.

The Verge reported that the notice on Sony's UK support site said a "detailed technical assessment" found "limitations related to the device's storage configuration" meant the Xperia 10 VI "does not support an Android 17 upgrade experience that we consider adequate." Sony said it had "decided not to make this upgrade available" and apologized that the decision "falls short of our original announcement."

TechRadar, citing a support post spotted by Phandroid, reported the same storage explanation and said the phone would receive two, rather than three, Android version updates. Sony said the Xperia 10 VI will still get the promised four years of security updates, which The Verge reported should extend until June 2028.

Sony also said the issue applies only to the Xperia 10 VI's technical specifications and does not affect promised OS updates for other Xperia models, according to both reports. The Verge noted that because technical requirements for future Android versions are not yet known, it is difficult to verify that assurance.

TechRadar reported that the rollback could raise questions about similar commitments from other manufacturers, especially high-end phones that promise up to seven years of updates. Google and Samsung have not shown signs of withdrawing their update commitments, TechRadar said, but the Xperia 10 VI case indicates such pledges may not always be guarantees.

Editor's Summary

Sony has reversed a promised Android 17 update for the Xperia 10 VI, saying storage configuration limits prevent an adequate upgrade experience. The phone will still receive security updates until 2028, and Sony says other Xperia models are unaffected. The decision highlights that long-term software support commitments can be revised when technical constraints emerge.
