South Korea deepfake sex video cases sent for review top 17,000 in eight months

South Korea’s media regulator received 17,378 deepfake sex videos for review in Jan-Aug 2026, exceeding 2025’s total.

The January-August figure was 9.9 percent higher than last year’s total, the data showed. The Korea Communications Standards Commission, which handles the reviews, has seen the number of such videos sent for review rise from 1,913 in 2021 to 3,574 in 2022, 7,187 in 2023 and 23,109 in 2024, before the count fell to 15,808 in 2025.

Lee said that with the number of reviews of deepfake sexual content already exceeding last year’s annual total, it was essential to closely examine the current situation and response mechanisms. She called for effective measures to prevent the spread of the content and protect victims.
