South Korea Financial Watchdog Calls Emergency Meeting With Banks Hit by Data Leaks

South Korea's Financial Services Commission will meet Sunday afternoon with the heads of banks and financial firms hit by recent hacking-related information leaks, moving the session up from Wednesday as the damage spread.

Financial Services Commission Chairman Lee Eog-weon is scheduled to preside over the meeting Sunday afternoon with the chief executive officers of the affected firms. According to the report, the session is expected to focus on how the companies and the regulator respond to the leaks.

The institutions identified in the report as having suffered the back-to-back leaks of customer and other information are Hana Bank, KB Kookmin Bank and Shinhan Bank.

The Financial Services Commission had originally planned to hold the meeting on Wednesday but moved it forward to Sunday after the damage spread to other financial institutions over the past few days, the report said.

The report did not say how many customers were affected, what kind of information was taken, or how the breaches were carried out, and it did not identify the parties believed to be responsible. It also did not give the total number of firms that will send representatives to Sunday's meeting.

A series of disclosures at individual banks preceded the decision to convene the chief executives, with the leaks reported at the banks in succession rather than as a single incident.
