South Korea's Nuri Rocket to Launch First Microsatellite Constellation
South Korea plans to launch its Nuri rocket on Oct. 7, 2026, carrying five NEONSAT Earth-observation satellites and 10 CubeSats. The mission would mark the country's first microsatellite constellation and test technology that could support a future Starlink-style network.
The payload consists of five New-space Earth Observation Satellite Constellation for National Safety units, known as NEONSATs, and 10 CubeSats. After launch, the five NEONSATs are to be joined by five more microsatellites, creating a 10-strong constellation to monitor the Korean Peninsula for national security threats and disaster response.
The 10 CubeSats represent scientific and corporate partnerships, while the NEONSATs are the focal point. Each NEONSAT weighs about 500 kg and carries electro-optical cameras intended to provide orbital monitoring of South Korea for disaster response, with the capacity to support national security scenarios.
Park Jae-sung, head of the Korea AeroSpace Administration's space transportation division, told press: "On its fifth launch, the Nuri rocket will attempt Korea's first satellite constellation launch mission. It will mark a turning point for the country's satellite development as it advances toward mass production and constellation operations."
The launch is the fifth for Nuri, South Korea's domestically developed rocket. The country has also stated a long-term ambition to reach Mars by 2045, a goal that has drawn comparisons to SpaceX's plans, TechRadar reported.
TechRadar reported that if the Nuri rocket successfully deploys its payloads and the NEONSATs link up as intended, a Starlink-like satellite internet system could not be ruled out for South Korea in the future.
Starlink currently refuses to provide internet to North Korea, where it is banned. A South Korea-only network of internet microsatellites would face the question of whether it could avoid providing connectivity to its neighbor. Phased array antennas, such as those used by Starlink, can direct data more specifically than traditional satellites, making such an approach technically feasible, according to the report.
North Korea's objections could still hamper any Starlink-inspired ambitions from Seoul. South Korea and North Korea are technically still at war, despite recently proposing talks to officially end the 1953 armistice.
The planned mission underscores South Korea's push to operate satellite constellations for both civil and security purposes. The NEONSAT constellation is designed to monitor the Korean Peninsula, and its first five units would form the first half of the planned 10-satellite system.
The Nuri launch is scheduled for October 7, 2026. A successful deployment would mark the first time South Korea has placed a microsatellite constellation in orbit and could shape later projects, including potential satellite internet services.
