South Korea's Presidential Office Holds Emergency Meeting Over Financial-Sector Hacking Attacks
South Korea's presidential office held an emergency meeting after data breaches at Mirae Asset, Bithumb and Daishin.
Song Ki-ho, vice chief of Cheong Wa Dae's National Security Office, presided over the meeting and reviewed the government's responses to the recent series of cyberattacks, the presidential office said.
Mirae Asset Global Investments, cryptocurrency exchange Bithumb and Daishin Securities all reported data breaches involving customer information earlier Wednesday following separate recent hacking attacks, according to the report.
Officials from the Financial Services Commission, the science ministry, the personal information protection watchdog and other cybersecurity-related institutions attended. The meeting reviewed progress in government investigations into the hacking cases and the response measures already taken, the presidential office said.
The officials also discussed measures to prevent phishing scams that use leaked personal information and to trace the routes of similar cyberattacks in order to prevent further incidents, according to Cheong Wa Dae.
Participating institutions agreed to share information rapidly on future hacking attacks and on the results of investigations into the recent cases while maintaining close cooperation.
"I ask you to make utmost efforts to respond rapidly to hacking attacks in the financial sector and prevent secondary damage as such incidents are directly related to the public's property and financial trust," the presidential office quoted Song as saying.
