South Korean Papers Lead With Suspected AI-Linked Bank Hacking, Samsung HBM Price Report

South Korean newspapers on Oct. 3 led with suspected AI-linked bank hacking, a report that Samsung will triple HBM prices next year, and the start of a new investigation agency as the prosecution service is scaled down.

Kookmin Daily reported widespread bank hacking suspected to involve AI tools. The roundup did not give the scope of the hacking, identify the banks affected or specify what role AI may have played.

On the technology side, Maeil Business Newspaper reported that Samsung will triple HBM prices next year. Korea Economic Daily led with a headline titled "Hidden winners in the AI war." The roundup did not carry the figures behind the HBM price report or name the companies described as winners.

Donga Ilbo reported that a new era of a scaled-down prosecution has begun as a new investigation agency starts work, and that Lee sought a confirmation hearing for the nominee to head the investigation agency. JoongAng Ilbo described the same institutional change with a different emphasis, reporting that the investigation and prosecution offices set out unilaterally with four seats empty.

Chosun Ilbo reported that acquittals over illegal evidence have quadrupled in 10 years despite defendants admitting to bribery. Hankook Ilbo led with a headline stating that imagination filled the gaps in modern history and that "extreme politics" had been thrown into the public sphere.

The seven headlines were carried by Korean-language dailies and were listed by Yonhap News Agency in its daily roundup of major South Korean newspapers.
