SpaceXAI apologizes after Grok outage at Memphis data center disrupts AI services

Grok and other AI services went down Thursday after a SpaceXAI data center outage; SpaceXAI apologized and says systems are restored.

Users began reporting problems around 9:00 AM ET on Downdetector, with more than 1,000 reports logged by late morning, according to Android Authority. Many said the platform displayed the message: “This model is unavailable. Please try a different model.”

SpaceXAI said in a post on X that all systems had been restored. “We are sorry for the issues you may have experienced with Grok following an outage at our Memphis compute center this morning. We'd also like to apologize to our impacted compute partners.”

The outage started at 6:30 AM PT and lasted three and a half hours, according to a company status page. Engadget reported that it affected Grok on X as well as on its Android and iOS apps. SpaceXAI did not disclose a cause, but Elon Musk said the company was “taking corrective action to ensure this does not happen again.”

The incident coincided with problems on other AI platforms. Anthropic's Claude experienced “elevated errors for multiple models” starting around 6:30 AM PT and was resolved by 9:16 AM PT, according to Anthropic's status page. OpenAI also reported “elevated errors across ChatGPT and Codex” beginning around 7:30 AM PT and resolved by 9:55 AM PT. Neither company said whether the issues were related to SpaceXAI's Memphis outage, though Anthropic signed a deal earlier this year to lease compute from SpaceXAI.
