SpaceXAI backs Omarchy, the controversial Linux distro, with $1.5 million in compute

SpaceXAI is joining the Omacom Foundation as a founding corporate patron and donating $1.5 million in Grok tokens to David Heinemeier Hansson's Omarchy Linux project, The Verge reported.

According to Hansson's blog post announcing the partnership, the tokens will primarily be used to accelerate development, review code, and patch bugs. The arrangement connects Grok tokens to Omarchy, a Linux distribution that has been described as controversial.

Hansson is a Danish entrepreneur known for creating Ruby on Rails and co-founding the company behind Basecamp. He has also become known for promoting anti-immigration policies through racist blog posts. In a July post, he compared immigrants to wolves and said, "When wolves get out of control, you shoot them."

The partnership follows earlier scrutiny of companies that contributed to Omarchy. 1Password previously found itself in hot water for contributing to Omarchy, as has Cloudflare. When asked by Nilay Patel on the Decoder podcast about Cloudflare's contributions to Hansson's Linux distro, Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince said he didn't think it was his job to "police different people's political beliefs."

The Verge said the combination of Grok and Omarchy aligned two controversial tech leaders. It said that if Elon Musk and SpaceXAI were going to back any Linux distro, Omarchy seemed an obvious choice.
