Spotify Adds Toggle to Keep Kids' Music Out of Recommendations and Wrapped

Spotify now lets users keep kids and family music out of their taste profile, recommendations, and Wrapped.

The toggle, labeled "Include kids and family music in taste profile," appears in the app under "Settings and privacy," then "Content and display." When switched off, users can still search for, listen to, and build playlists of kids' and family music, but those streams will not influence Spotify's suggestions, including Discover Weekly, Daily Mix, and Wrapped. Engadget reported that Spotify said the change could take up to 48 hours to be reflected in personalized recommendations.

Spotify said the setting applies retroactively, meaning children's music already listened to this year can be kept out of Wrapped top songs or artists. TechCrunch reported that the toggle defaults to including kids and family music in the taste profile, so users must turn it off to exclude it. The music covered includes songs from animated movies, theme songs from family TV shows, nursery rhymes, and other children's music.

The issue arises from shared listening. Parents often use their own accounts for children's music on home TVs, smart speakers, tablets, and in cars, even when children have separate accounts on a family plan. As a result, Spotify's algorithm can treat nursery rhymes, Disney tracks, or kids' pop as the account owner's taste. TechCrunch noted that users have complained about this annually since Wrapped began.

Spotify previously added ways to exclude specific playlists and individual tracks from taste profiles. In 2025, it introduced Managed Accounts, which give children under 13 a separate space on a shared family plan with parental controls. Managed Accounts rolled out to all U.S. users earlier this summer after a pilot, according to Android Authority. The new toggle addresses situations that Managed Accounts do not cover, such as a parent playing children's music from their own account.

The feature drew praise from parents and tech writers. A 9to5Mac article said the option has been on an Apple Music wishlist for years and that Apple Music users can currently use Focus modes to toggle listening history on and off, though the workaround requires remembering to switch modes. The article said it hoped Apple would follow Spotify's move.

Spotify's new control is part of a broader effort to separate shared family listening from individual taste profiles. The company said the toggle is rolling out now on mobile for Free and Premium users globally. Engadget reported that the feature works alongside existing explicit-content controls, which also note a delay of up to 48 hours before changes appear in recommendations.
