Spotify launches native in-car app in select Audi vehicles

Spotify launched a native Android Automotive OS app in select Audis, enabling phone-free playback.

Unlike Android Auto, which projects apps from a smartphone onto the dashboard, Android Automotive runs directly on the car’s infotainment system. That means Spotify can launch and play music without connecting a phone through Bluetooth or a cable. The new app supports Spotify Jam, DJ, music videos, real-time lyrics and hands-free voice controls.

The app is rolling out to supported Audi models across 47 markets. Android Authority reported that more automakers are expected to join over the coming year.

The launch extends Google’s push into in-car entertainment this year. Google has redesigned Android Auto’s music player and expanded the selection of apps available in vehicles with Google built-in, according to the report. Spotify’s native app takes a different approach by removing the phone from the playback chain for supported Audi models.
