Spotify Launches Technology Site to Formalize Enterprise Software Push
Spotify launched technology.spotify.com on Thursday, offering its internal developer and enterprise tools to outside companies, according to TechCrunch. The move formalizes a business that already includes Backstage, Confidence, Portal and Xirp.
The move expands efforts Spotify has been building for years. The company open sourced Backstage, a platform and framework for building customizable developer portals, in 2020. It has sold Confidence, an enterprise-focused software experimentation platform, since 2023, and Portal, an enterprise software development platform, since 2024. Earlier this year, it began selling Xirp, a developer tool for managing AI coding agents.
The new website will house solutions Spotify built for its own audience of 777 million monthly active users, including both open source and paid services, the company said. It does not list pricing; instead, companies can fill out a form to contact sales and discuss their needs.
Many technology companies build their own internal systems to help developers work more efficiently, but it is unusual for a company like Spotify to sell those tools to other businesses. Tyson Singer, Spotify's senior vice president of technology and platform, acknowledged that the strategy has raised questions.
"I get asked a version of this question every day: why is Spotify in the business of selling software?" Singer wrote in a post on Spotify's engineering site. "The truth is, the Spotify you know and love is more than a great streaming service. Behind our consumer app are hundreds of cross-functional squads shipping products and code day in, day out."
Spotify argues that although AI has made building such software faster, it has not necessarily made it simpler. "The complexity, the cost and the operational surface area all grow with it," Singer wrote. Spotify's bet is that software development teams will still require certain core services, like those it sells, which the company says will be agent-ready.
It is unclear how much revenue Spotify's enterprise sales are generating. The company has not disclosed those figures in its financial reporting. That could change as Spotify makes a more concerted push into the enterprise market, turning what was once a side business into a more formal operation.
