Spotify Opens AI-Powered Taste Profile to U.S. Premium Subscribers in Beta

Spotify has begun rolling out its AI-powered Taste Profile to U.S. Premium subscribers, letting them see and edit how the service shapes music, podcast and audiobook recommendations. The beta feature first reached New Zealand after being unveiled at SXSW in March.

Taste Profile gives listeners a direct way to influence the recommendations that appear in the app's Home feed. It underlies choices across Spotify's Discover Weekly playlist, Made for You recommendations and the annual Spotify Wrapped review. Spotify's algorithmic understanding of a listener's habits is widely credited as a secret to its success, but TechCrunch reported that the recommendations do not always reflect users' evolving tastes, and the platform often ends up recommending too-similar music when a user would rather branch out.

With Taste Profile, users can request more variety or ask for more or less of a certain genre, artist or overall vibe. They can also use it to remove recommendations based on music they may regularly stream but do not necessarily want to see more of, such as sleep sounds played at night or music a teenager plays in the car on a parent's account. Until now, Spotify offered options to remove certain tracks or playlists from a Taste Profile, and the company recently added a toggle designed to prevent kids' music from affecting parents' recommendations.

To find the feature in the mobile app, users tap their profile picture, scroll down and select Taste Profile. There they can explore how Spotify currently understands their taste across music, podcasts and audiobooks. Under "Tell us more," they can enter what they want to adjust and send the message. TechCrunch reported that after a few hours, the app's Home Page reflects a different set of suggestions.

Spotify said the feature can be used when listeners want to explore a new genre or era but are not sure where to start, or when they want to adjust the vibe of their music, such as by asking for more energizing tracks. Users can also tell Spotify what kinds of podcasts and audiobooks they want in order to shape those recommendations. The feature is still in beta, and the company did not offer a timeline for when it would reach a wider audience, according to TechCrunch.

TechRadar also reported in a headline that Spotify's Taste Profile tool is now available in beta for U.S. Premium subscribers. Separately, TechRadar published a headline saying Samsung is reportedly adding security chips to Galaxy phone batteries to combat fake replacements; the article body available for that item contained only an author biography and no further details.
