Spotify Pulls 50 Million AI Slop Tracks From Recommendations

Spotify removed over 50 million AI-generated slop or spam tracks from recommendations in the past year, it said Tuesday.

The company said its editors apply the same standard and do not program content identified as slop or spam. Since the changes, Spotify said it has seen a marked decrease in listener concerns about such content appearing in recommendations.

Spotify has not required labels on all AI tracks. It has introduced an “AI Persona” badge for artists that use an AI identity and do not represent a real person, and it said it will not recommend music from AI personas. The company said it determines whether a track may be AI-generated slop using a combination of listener engagement and feedback, upload patterns, metadata and third-party AI detection tools.

Other music streaming services have taken different approaches. YouTube Music places labels on AI songs, Deezer gives users an option to filter out AI slop, and Bandcamp bans AI music entirely, The Verge reported.

Spotify said last year that it took down more than 75 million songs identified as spam. The company is also partnering with Universal Music Group and independent music publisher Believe to launch a tool for creating AI music remixes.
