Star Wars: Galactic Racer devs recommend playing with your feet

Star Wars: Galactic Racer launches Oct 6 on Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC. Creative director Kieran Crimmins suggests playing with your feet to emulate Sebulba. The game is set in the post-Return of the Jedi Outer Rim.

Developed by Fuse Games and published by Lucasfilm Games, Star Wars: Galactic Racer is an arcade racing title that lets players pilot podracers and other vehicles as iconic characters from the films. In a recent preview hands-on, TechRadar spotted Sebulba and Ben Quadinaros from The Phantom Menace in both Scenario mode and intense online player-versus-player battles. They appear alongside new characters such as story protagonist Shade and her companion Hibi, who is described as having an unapologetically Scouse-sounding accent.

Lucasfilm Games executive producer Craig Derrick said the inclusion of returning characters serves a real purpose. "It's important to have some returning characters if they're important, if they're meaningful," he told TechRadar. He hinted that Sebulba's mischievous personality remains, but the game may play with expectations and possibly subvert what fans know about him.

Sebulba is one of the most memorable characters from The Phantom Menace, partly because of his unique podracing stance: he pilots his craft with his feet. Creative director Kieran Crimmins said he would love to see players try to emulate this. "If they're not controlling it with their feet, then are they really playing the game properly?" he asked. "I would absolutely love to see someone try and do that. Please send me the footage."

The game takes place in the New Republic Era, shortly after the events of Return of the Jedi, in the perilous Outer Rim. Derrick explained that this setting helps distance the story from the galaxy-wide stakes of the films, creating a more local narrative. Crimmins noted that the period was inspired by the end of World War II, when ex-military pilots turned to racing. This is reflected in characters like Griff Halloran, an ex-Tie fighter pilot who still wears his battle-worn armor.

The timeframe also allows the team to draw from all eras of Star Wars. "You can pull from all the different time periods," Crimmins said, pointing to the depth of lore, characters, and design language from both the original and prequel trilogies. Players will race through iconic locations such as the Boonta Eve Classic course and Jakku from The Force Awakens, with more recognizable planets yet to be revealed.
