Static Hour Puts You in the Shoes of a Crisis News Editor

In 'Static Hour,' players are a 1980s nighttime news editor navigating a crisis, deciding what to report. The game is planned for PC via Steam with no release date yet.

Set entirely within the newsroom, players must unravel an emergency by monitoring phones, a radio, and a police scanner for fragments of truth. The scenario includes a government lockdown, panic, and reports of violence between family members, while the player must follow FCC regulations and manage the public's reaction to anything they report. The limited collection of analog technology in the station provides additional tools.

Barkbyte founder and creative director Claire Sarmiento, in a press release covered by Engadget, said the inspiration came from "the idea of spooky things happening in a small town just out of sight, where the horrors are driven by audio and left to your imagination." She added that sorting through junk data, red herrings, and scattered facts to decipher truth from speculation felt like a relevant flavor of horror.

Engadget's preview notes that the game evokes a mix of "Papers, Please" with shades of "Twin Peaks" or "Severance," creating a tense, haunting scenario that feels larger than the single room. The use of rotary phones and rolodexes, combined with a muted color palette, also nails the 1980s aesthetic. While only a trailer and screenshots have been shown so far, the game appears to deliver on its stated premise.
