Stuck Pixel on a Laptop: Causes and Fixes

Engadget reports that stuck pixels have several causes and that even the best laptops are not immune. Physical damage is among the most common, such as dropping a device and damaging transistors, or pressing too hard on a panel and disturbing an LCD screen's liquid crystal. Power surges can damage internal components, and exposure to extreme temperatures can also cause problems. Aging equipment is another factor: the longer a device has been used, the more likely an internal fault becomes.
The guidance says stuck pixels do not spread like an infection, so one faulty pixel does not mean the entire screen will soon fail. If the stuck pixel stems from a broader manufacturing defect, such as faulty transistors or improper component sealing, more pixels may begin to have issues. Warranty coverage can depend on whether the problem is recurring or widespread. Engadget notes that a single stuck pixel might not qualify for replacement, while a cluster of them might meet the manufacturer's threshold.
Before trying any repair method, Engadget suggests turning off the device for a day or so, which might be enough to reset the pixel. After that, there are three main methods: software, pressure and heat. The latter two carry the potential to cause more damage, so caution is important.
The easiest and safest option is software designed to unstick pixels. JScreenFix is a popular option, and PixelHealer is another program, though it is only available for Windows. These tools use rapid color cycling to help cycle the pixel's transistor and unstick it. Engadget warns that people with photosensitive epilepsy or a similar condition should be cautious when using pixel-healing software.
For the pressure method, a user needs a pointed but not sharp tool, such as a pen cap, a stylus or a finger, along with a soft protective barrier, ideally a microfiber cloth. With the screen off, the barrier should cover the tool, and light pressure should be applied to the area with the stuck pixel. While still applying pressure, the device should be turned back on to check whether the pixel has unstuck. If it has not, the cycle can be repeated a few more times.
The heat method requires turning the device off first. A cloth should be warmed but not made hot, then placed on the stuck pixel area for a few minutes. The device can then be powered back on. As with the pressure technique, the process can be repeated a few times if the first attempt fails, but Engadget advises taking longer breaks between sessions to avoid heating other internal components too much.
